Four major reasons were considered for the development
of a new technology natural gas engine for trucks (and busses):
- The economical situation i.e. profit situation of truck fleet owners
and the development of oil price during the past decade.
- Security of supply of oil (NB EU policy Target 2020)
- The environmental pollution caused by heavy duty diesel vehicles
- The climate change which is considered to be influenced by CO2 emission
|
The use of natural gas as prime mover fuel for clean and high efficient
Heavy Duty NG engines can play an important part in simultaneously solving
the pre-mentioned four problems because:
- Commodity prices of NG as prime mover fuel is lower than traditional fuels
like diesel and gasoline.
- The security of supply of NG is substantially better than for oil.
- NOx, NMHC and Pm10 emission are substantially better than for diesel.
- CO2 emission can be reduced by 25% compared to HDD (heavy duty diesel)
|
The CO2 emission issue can become even more important when new diesel
fuel (GTL Gas To Liquid) is concerned. GTL is on a par with CO2 emission
property than conventional diesel fuel see picture FZ Jülich.
