R & D > Motivation

Four major reasons were considered for the development of a new technology natural gas engine for trucks (and busses):
  1. The economical situation i.e. profit situation of truck fleet owners and the development of oil price during the past decade.

  2. Security of supply of oil (NB EU policy Target 2020)

  3. The environmental pollution caused by heavy duty diesel vehicles

  4. The climate change which is considered to be influenced by CO2 emission

The use of natural gas as prime mover fuel for clean and high efficient Heavy Duty NG engines can play an important part in simultaneously solving the pre-mentioned four problems because:
  • Commodity prices of NG as prime mover fuel is lower than traditional fuels like diesel and gasoline.
  • The security of supply of NG is substantially better than for oil.
  • NOx, NMHC and Pm10 emission are substantially better than for diesel.
  • CO2 emission can be reduced by 25% compared to HDD (heavy duty diesel)

The CO2 emission issue can become even more important when new diesel fuel (GTL Gas To Liquid) is concerned. GTL is on a par with CO2 emission property than conventional diesel fuel see picture FZ Jülich.
