In order to achieve the above mentioned objectives, NONOX has developed a new EOCV technology. EOCV stands for Electromagnetic Operated Control Valve. This EOCV acts as a load control valve (engine power control valve). It replaces the well know throttle valve. The principle of operation (see animation) of the EOCV allows a substantial reduction in the pumping losses in the Otto cylce. This contributes to a much better efficiency of the engine compared to conventional Otto cycle engines. The EOCV also enables the application of high compression ratio because Miller timing can be used (early intake valve closure). High CR also contributes to higher engine efficiency.

The EOCV is composed of a valve body structure, an electromagnetic actuator and the moving part of the valve. The airflow enters the valve body from left. The pressure difference over the valve does not influence the required actuator force because of the fact that delta-p-forces are balanced due to the shape of the valve. Once the valve is opened, intake air is passed through the valve entering the cylinder head. The whole structure is sandwiched between the cylinder head and the intake manifold. The electromagnetic actuator is a moving magnet actuator.
